2013 was the best year in smartphones. It obviously has to be. We saw such significant improvements in technology previously added to some smartphones and certain new features that make us want to buy a certain smartphone more than any other one. Picking out the top 10 smartphones of 2013 was no easy tasks. We did not have any standout phone that would clearly take the top spot. It came down to priority, would I care more about the performance, or software or camera etc.
So finally after few good hours of thought process, here is Gadget Speaks’s Top 10 Smartphones of 2013.
10. Sony Xperia Z1
This smartphone has got it’s place here solely because it provides something no other phone can- resistance to water and being dust proof. Also the Sony Xperia Z1 has a stunning built and is high on specifications. But it has got the last spot because it does not offer you any features and at the same time it is not stock Android too, thus it is more of a lose-lose situation. What it does give you is a full HD 5 inch display, 2GB RAM, 20.7 MP camera and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor! That is awesome.
9. Nokia Lumia 1020
Nokia Lumia 1020 is not just one of the best smartphones of 2013 but the best camera smartphone from this year. It is not only because of that powerful 40.1MP sensor that it gets this tag but also because of the revolutionary new camera apps that give you DSLR like controls on board. It has been put up at 9th spot because Windows Phone still has not acquired the uniformity for both users and developers in the ecosystem. Though apps have started to flow it is still not up to the mark that makes it a solid competitor to Android and iOS.
8. LG G2
I would not completely agree with it’s position too but it other phones are just too cool for it to be placed before them. LG G2 is a smartphone with 5.2 inch full HD display and all those specs that give it the raw power. It has been given this place because of the amazing features LG has introduced in it. those features are almost like the ones on Galaxy Note series but with LG’s own twist and much needed improvement.
7. Nokia Lumia 1520
Many of you might wonder why Nokia Lumia 1020 at 9 and Nokia Lumia 1520 at 7? Well, Nokia Lumia 1520’s camera is not far behind the Nokia Lumia 1020’s. This one has a 20MP Carl Zeiss lens and can match the 1020 up to a certain level. On the up side, it also has a full HD display (6.0 inches) compared to a standard HD on 1020. Also, Nokia Lumia 1520 is significantly faster than the Nokia Lumia 1520 with the Snapdragon 800.
6. Samsung Galaxy S4
Released early in 2013, this phone was one of the best sellers of 2013 but could not hold too well in the market. It did not even match the buzz Galaxy SIII had generated. Samsung Galaxy S4 is also one of those phones that give you much more power than you can ask for. The things that stand out in this phone are the features. It has such interactive features that are really handy, no not the Air View and stuff but the Smart Stay, Smart Pause etc. Even the camera interface provides you so much more than actually remember to use, the sensor too take amazing photographs.
5. Samsung Galaxy Note III
No, we are not giving it a higher rank just because it has a larger display. Note III is much faster and simplified (as ironic that sounds). It also has a unique feature no other phone has- it can capture video in 4K quality. The features that use the stylus are absolutely amazing. Note III
is an absolute sucker for entertainment and you won’t be disappointed.
4. HTC One
HTC One might not have features as much as those Samsung phones but their user interface is cleaner and makes more sense. The new HTC Sense UI has amazing features too which do not suck your RAM or processor speed. HTC Zoe is an amazing app for your camera and HTC Blinkfeed provides you all the updates at one place. Also the Beats built in amplifier have resulted in the best speakers on a smartphone yet and the aluminium built is just amazing to have.
3. iPhone 5S
Apple’s iPhone 5S surely deserves the spot 3 for 3 simple reasons- 1. A7 64 bit processor. 2. TouchID 3. New Camera with true tone flash. iPhone 5S is so powerful that developers are still trying to tap the best from the 64 bit processor. The touchID as controversial it is, still does your job for authenticating your phone for purchases and unlocking it. People do not realize, it is used for much more than just unlock your phone. iPhone 5S’s camera is as incredible as the 1020. It might not have the resolution but this sensor makes Nokia Lumia 1020’s images look like a kid. The colours on iPhone 5S’s images are more realistic and it captures macro details way better. Also, iOS’s ecosystem is the best period.
2. Google LG Nexus 5
I just had to give it to this phone. The cleanest and the best Android phone ever made. If you are sick of your phone started to starve to death after 8-months or so because it is well Android, switch to a Nexus device. They run stock Android and they never say no. Nexus 5 runs the latest v4.4 Android KitKat. It has a 5 inch full HD display and Snapdragon 800 processor. Even the built quality on the phone is just incredible. The camera on board is pretty neat, much better than the 8MP sensor we had on Nexus 4.
1. Motorola Moto X
Some people might think I am kidding but I am not. Motorola is being criticised for no reason actually. Full HD or 720p HD, you are just going for the number. It has an older processor but it is optimized in a way that it runs like butter. Motorola Moto X’s always listening mode makes you access and make your phone do anything without even touching it. Say you have even misplaced your phone at home, just go on shouting “Ok, Google” and if it is there in the room, it will reply. It also has battery life that no other smartphone can match. The smart notifications give you just the info you need. The driving controls are simply incredible. You also get full ability to control the looks of your phone with over 504 combinations to choose from, not just the back panel but the button colours and front panel as well. World’s actual smartphone.
