Sony Xperia ZR Review

Sony did wonders with this device called Sony Xperia ZR. It recently “massively” outsold even the Samsung Galaxy S4. The competition should have been against the front runner Xperia Z but instead the Sony Xperia ZR are doing it for them, at least in one country. The phone looks really amazing. From the time you hold it, it just feels great. The phone is quiet powerful and it has a massive Quad Core 1.5 GHz processor with 2GB of RAM. The adjective I feel like using for this phone is “massive”.

Sony Xperia ZR
This phone looks super sexy. It is covered in the same type of glass like that on the Sony Xperia Z. The design is just like the Z too, like a perfectly rectangle casting from the front. But, it is really very delicately curved at the back. Maybe Sony realized stone slabs should only look like stone slabs. The built quality with that glass casing is really good. It feels really amazing in your hands, like you are holding something really expensive. The phone has a decent weight, weighing about 134g when you consider the size which measures 131.3 x 67.3 x 10.5 mm (5.17 x 2.65 x 0.41 in). The thickness is just about right scaling 10.5mm. The phone has the usual 3.5mm headphone jack, the volume rocker and a dedicated camera button for taking photographs.

Sony Xperia ZR Display
When you buy an expensive phone, the display really counts maybe more than anything else. Don’t worry this bad boy has a beautiful 4.5 inch display. It is a TFT capacitive touchscreen display. It supports multitouch from all 10 fingers. The display has a high resolution of 720×1280 pixels. The aspect ratio is not as like that on other phones. The display is also stunning because of the high 323ppi pixel density. The colours are not flushed out at all, they are really good. Looking at the HD images or videos is an absolute treat. No need to get a scratch guard for this phone, the screen is very safe from the gorilla glass casing. You also get the best of the Bravia Mobile engine that is processing the best it can for your display to look beautiful.

Sony Xperia ZR Performance
Sony Xperia ZR encases a very powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 chip clocked at 1.5GHz. It is has a quad core. The phone also fancies 2 giga bytes of RAM. Together, they are just an unstoppable force. Lag is no more in the dictionary, okay I might have got a little too excited. The phone performs super smooth and superfast. I think now we are at a time in tech when we can’t judge if the HTC ONE is faster or the Samsung Galaxy S4 just by using them. For a nomad they will be experienced as equally fast. It’s just stunning to see how far the technology has pushed the envelope. The “massive” 2300mAh battery gives you a good battery backup with 11h and 13h of talk time on 2G and 3G respectively. The standby time is about 470h on 2G to 520h on 3G. All this is avalialbe under water too, thanks to its water resistance properties.

Sony Xperia ZR Camera

Surprisingly the camera on the Sony Xperia ZR took better photos than the Xperia Z- that is some serious messed up stuff. The Sony Xperia ZR has a primary camera with a sensor of 13.1MP to be precise. It takes wonderful images in a high resolution of 4128×3096 pixels. It comes with a dedicated camera button enabling you to pull off the camera from anywhere on the phone, irrespective of on what application you are at. This camera is so amazing you can switch it over for your normal point and shoot and take if for a vacation without any hesitation. It records video in 1080p quality i.e full High Definition. You get options of HDR and feature of sweep panorama. The camera can detect smiles and faces too. The front camera is just a VGA camera, utter disappointment.

Sony Xperia ZR Software

Sony Xperia ZR runs on the Android v4.1.1 Jelly Bean. The platform is just amazing as a developer or a user. With developer the major advantage just comes from the word Android which covers a major part of the market share. The SDK provided from Google is the most interactive SDK period. For users, you just get a galaxy of applications to choose from. You get all the music, movies, books, games and just anything and everything you wish you had. Android brings you amazingly useful widgets to your home screen. It also gives you a beautiful notification panel with recent updates; also the place from where you can choose to switch on or off your Wi-Fi Bluetooth, NFC, screen orientation or anything your phone is capable of doing with control. Android gives the power to the user unlike the iOS.

Memory and Data

Sony Xperia ZR has an internal memory of 8GB. You can use microSD cards to take this up to 32 GB. It has a main memory or RAM of 2GB which we already mentioned above. You get Bluetooth version 4.0 and NFC to connect to various devices wirelessly or share files or many other things they are capable of. Normal connection for data flow can be done by using microUSB ports. The phone can connect to all the 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks.

Final Thoughts

This phone is just wonderful. Sony Xperia ZR is an absolute stunner in the high end mobile world. It does not have much features when you compare it to Samsung’s Galaxy S4 or HTC ONE but then it is priced much lower with the same power and specs. This phone stands out in looks too against the Galaxy S4, no doubt. If you are considering this phone, buy it. It won’t disappoint. Also, it works and captures videos and images underwater! That is incredible.

Sony Xperia ZR comes for a price of Rs29,000
