Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Review

Now the world of smartphone and still digital cameras come together with the release of the latest Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. But do not let the name fool you, though it is Samsung Galaxy S4 it does not have its Air View or Play/Pause feature on video playback or the other bunch of things but it does have the Smart Stay and Smart Rotate. Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has a great camera, even if it is average it merges two wonderful worlds of smart phone and digital cameras. But the basic small lens effect might be lost that many crave for. Let’s have a closer look on the phone and the camera.

From the front the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S Duos but larger. And from the back just like the design of the previously released Samsung Galaxy Camera which was an Android powered camera and not a smart phone. It goes without saying that the phone is much heavier than standard smart phones and very thick as well. The problem for your pockets will be because of the thickness and not from the weight which is 208 grams by the way. The thickness of Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom is a staggering 15.4 mm. but you gain some and you lose some. But a hybrid of both a digital camera and smart phone might be dream come true for many people. Both the volume rockers and the lock or the home button are placed to the right of the phone along with the camera button for the amazing camera. The built and finial finishing of this phone is surprisingly good, it has a very smooth finish on the polycarbonate body.

The display on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is more or less disappointing. Some people might think this might be a waste of their money but the heavy sum is for the camera than the display you know. Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 4.3 inch qHD display with a resolution of 540×960 pixels and pixel density of 256 ppi. The brightness to colour ratio is really bad I am talking go home 10 kilometers by foot bad. The sunlight contrast ratio is fairly average with a precise 3.118 to 3.352 on the Samsung Galaxy S4 (the big daddy). The display can easily see in direct sunlight. As the phone has a relatively lower pixel density the display is not at all sharp when you compare it to phones of the same price tag hanging around you but remember it is not what you paid for. Full HD content does not flow like it should rather even 720p HD videos does not look as beautiful as they would on other smart phones in same price range.

This is what you are here for right? The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 16 MP camera on the point and shoot. The other owners of the smart phones might see the display and be like “eh, right” and then you turn the phone and they are like “Ahhh….right”. The sensor size is ½.33 just brilliant for great shots even in low light conditions where you might take the option of not using the flash. The camera has an x10 digital zoom to go with. All this in a smart phone, your life is made buddy. Camera interface plays a huge role, but as this is a smart phone the camera UI is much more interactive and easy to use. It has the same camera user interface that saw its debut on Samsung Galaxy Camera. but for a fact it does not capture the true colours of a perfect scenery- the perfect sunset or sunrise thanks to the bigger sensor. But everything else is just brilliant for smart phone cameras which is rather a point and shoot in this case. The images are really sharp and you can distinctly point out details. When you compare the photos of the usual smaller lens- the basic smart phone camera and a digital point and shoot, you can see the colours are more enhanced and the image might be said to be over saturated on the default mode. On the point and shoot you really have to get the settings and the balance right for the desirable shot. But then digital point and shoot can do a lot more than that.
The camera also has a perfectly smooth panorama mode that stitches photos as you move and gives you the perfect shot. The HDR mode is really good but great but you can see over detailing at times that might not be too good for the overall outlook of the image but it sure does give richer colours. The optical image stabilization is available for both the images and the video recording. The camera takes beautiful full HD videos and thanks to OIS it is just better than most smart phones. You can also shoot photos while recording video.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom runs on the Android v4.2.2 with the user interface being Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI. Together they redefine simplicity and give users with exciting features as well. Android gives you the base on which TouchWiz provides you with a great customizable phone and thanks to the openness of Android certain skins can be used and you can make the UI look like that of WP8 or iOS! Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has smart stay and smart rotate. Smart stay allows the phone to not lock automatically while you are still looking at it, it is the most handy feature when it comes to reading. Smart Rotate is uses the orientation of the eye instead of the sensors. You get the usual widgets that you can place on any home page and also some apps of daily use.

Performance and Memory

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom uses a pretty old chipset- the Pega Dual +XMM626 which is a Dual Core 1.5GHz Cortex A9. The RAM on board is 1.5 GB which is very much necessary when you are moving through the memory card and accessing the images or when you are into the camera UI and taking photographs because if you are going to miss a shot because the phone could not switch fast enough your shot could be doomed. Though it is an old chipset it scores good enough on the benchmarks with score just lower than Samsung Galaxy S III. The internal memory on Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is about 8GB with 5GB being user available. You can extend it to 64GB using the microSD cards. The phone comes with NFC which is a huge plus and latest Bluetooth v 4.0. The 2330mAh battery is very handy and gives good backup- standby of 570hrs and 13hrs of talktime when connected to 3G.

Final Thoughts

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom has deserved its spot with its price range being the perfect hybrid for people to buy. If some of the smart phone users were not happy with the small sensors then this is their place. But the weight and size of the devices have to be tolerated if it is the phone you are more concerned about. The display should have been better but for the camera UI the display’s size and sunlight ratio is just great. It is a wonderful gadget to own without a doubt.
