Lava Iris 501 is another great device from the smart phone making company that started out pretty rough but has gone forward with making good phones in recent times. Lava Iris 501 is supposed to up their revenue and enter their phones in the better of the high end (in terms of specs) category of devices. These days one of the main selling point for smart phone is a good large display hence even Lava has gone out to incorporate 5 inch displays in the Lava Iris 501 and later phones. Lava Iris 501 is a good device, it has everything you might consider as a minimum requirement.
Like most of the phones in the market, even Lava Iris 501 has a pretty basic look, it is curved on the corners and very slightly curved on the back near the edges. The built is pretty decent too with its moderate quality recast plastic, it gives the phone a very smooth and comfortable feel. The large size might be a concern if you consider using your phone just with one hand and reaching the whole phone, every button anywhere then well that might be a problem. Sadly for people who like to have good option on colors, there is only one available here- Black. But then black is the most gone to color in the market for a phone so you should be good to go with it.
Lava Iris 501 has a 5.0 inch display which is a TFT capacitive touch screen display with a very decent resolution of 480×800 pixels. The display looks fabulous, there is no doubt about it. The colors are lovely, they are vibrant and look very nice. The display is so good that your eyes shall be locked on it. Though it is not an HD display, it is somewhere there. The viewing angles are a bit of disappointment coming for this price. But this display is a huge improvement over their last series of devices that came out in 2012. The display might look a bit grainy and does not have deep enough black levels. The video playback is also pretty average but the size allows you to use it for more time.
The lenses or the sensors used on the cameras on budget smart phones are not as good as you might find on the good well-known companies such as Samsung, HTC or Apple. The camera on the Lava Iris 501 comes with a 5MP primary sensor and a VGA secondary camera. The images are quiet average in terms of color and saturation. The video recording is more or less poor on this handset which is not a surprise. It does have autofocus and touch to focus but the macro shots lack the general detailing. The software used with the camera is really handy though. The normal shots in good conditions are good, it does capture a well light area very well but again if you look critically by cropping it, it does not have good uniformity or ability to get that same detailing you wish for.
Lava’s Iris 501 comes with a dual core 1GHz processor and along with it 512MB of RAM. The smart phone works very well with such a powerful processor. It is significantly slower than the Micromax’s 1GHz processors though. Lava Iris 501 does not have that fluid feel while navigating you way throughout the phone. It experiences quite a bit of lag. This is not the initial experience but as you become more familiar and spend some time you can see the response slowing down at places. But the phone can handle video playback quiet well, from the display and in terms of viewing engine. Games can be a bit of a mess but the general ones will work just fine but not perfectly.
Lava Iris 501 runs on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The operating system is very user friendly. It allows you to set up the whole look of the phone, the home pages, the widgets in a way that you want it to reflect. The applications are listen like your usual desktop icons and you can create their shortcuts to be put on any of the home screens. Certain daily apps are placed right at the bottom for you to access even from the lock screen. The notification panel not only helps you to see unattended alerts but also switch on or off your wifi or phone data or screen orientation- basically it is your control center for certain usual things that make a difference. Thanks to Google there is a healthy environment with loads of apps on the Play Store that you can use.
The smartphone which is supposed to turn the fortune of Lava as a whole company comes with 4GB of inbuilt memory and you can use the microSD cards to further add some more memory though it will further slow down the phone. So it is good they got you a 4GB in built memory. It supports both 2G and 3G networks and is also dual sim.
Lava Iris 501 is a pretty great phone for the cost it comes for. You have everything you need, a good amount of inbuilt memory, a 5inch display, average looks and good enough performance. If you want to own a 5 inch phone for an affordable price, this is your forte.
Lava Iris 501 comes for Rs. 7650
