HTC 8S Review

HTC has really given into everything to provide us with the best. They go all out to try something new, something creative and take the risk required. Their risks have always paid off, starting from basic models to feature phones to Android and now complimenting Windows Phone 8 with their amazing innovation in hardware technology and in software UI. They have also gone out to try the Facebook Home created by FB to transform Android we will get there later. So HTC introduces its flagship WP8 phones the HTC 8S and the HTC 8X. We would be talking about the HTC 8S here. It is the younger sibling to 8X which is not so “able”. The phone is great on design, camera, performance, software and well everything!

HTC 8S Design
Like in every HTC phone review we have written, we have always talking about how much we love the design and how much we love the phone feels and compliments its price. Well take the best you have read (if you haven’t then go read some of our HTC reviews) and double that and now consider the best phone you have looked at and combine them, it is till nothing like that! Nothing like you have seen before. The HTC 8S is so beautiful curved on the back, its unreal how perfect it fits in your hands.

Courtesy sound engineering team and HTC team, they have made micro drills on the back that give the best sound you will ever hear coming out from a phone. The matte finish, just brilliant! Feels of the highest quality and like no price could match this. You would forget the aluminium if you held this. It is very light weighing just 118g. It has a 3.5mm jack, volume rockers and a microUSB port.

HTC 8S Windows Phone 8
Powered by Windows Phone 8, this phone is in a class of its own. People always underestimated Windows Phone 8 but it rose above everything and proved to be brilliant in the market even against iOS and Android. In India, WP8 crossed iPhones in sales. The price of iPhones does not help its cause but yeah. WP 8 has a fresh flat design; the live tiles are unique and astonishing. No need to open your apps to small updates, you get them live on the live tiles. It is so easy to use, you can use the whole phone with one hand, design wise and functionality wise. The search is integrated with Bing (Microsoft). Multitasking made easy so is getting to the apps. Instead of those small icons we get like on desktop and iOS or Android here it’s just a list of applications with their names. The WP8 store now has 500,000+ apps including all the basic ones you would need Games, Music and Social Media applications.

HTC 8S Display
One of the best displays we have ever seen on a 15,000INR phone. The HTC 8S has a 4inch S-LCD display. It is so rich and vibrant in the 16mil colours up for display. The resolution of this screen is 480×800 pixels with 233ppi. WP8 is such an OS which does a great job in enhancing each pixel even 130ppi on a WP8 phone looks like a 180ppi and not as pixelated it should be. So 233 ppi looks brilliant with everything you do. Viewing HD content is so soothing to the eyes, oh I need to go look at the phone again.

HTC 8S Camera
The huge disappointment comes on the non-availability of secondary camera. You expect that in a phone you pay 15,000INR for. Even a VGA one, just to “be there”. The primary camera is a 5MP camera taking photos in 2592×1944 pixels which look absolutely stunning. It is the best 5MP camera we have seen in the HTC 5MP camera lot. Great performance in low light and day light both. Details captured from this camera of flowers are just incredible. Beyond beautiful. It captured video in 720p quality. The camera has LED flash and touch to focus capability.

With a Snapdragon Dual Core 1GHz processor along with 512MB this phone has the correct fire power to meet the needs of your applications running over. One downside is the 512MB not because it is not good enough but you can say this problem of WP8 rather. Temple Run needs 1GB of min RAM to run, hence it does not show up on your store. That is kind of a downside. But the apps available will run smooth and fast. WP8 does not lag, Microsoft has made sure they carefully manage the specs and apps hand in hand not compromising the performance like that on Android by updates that suck the ability of RAM and makes the phone beg for mercy.

HTC 8S has a 4GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32GB using microSD cards. As mentioned above, the main memory of this phone is 512MB. You can share data using the Bluetooth v3.1. 8S supports 2G and 3G data wavebands. Then there is the microUSB to use. Thanks to Microsoft, you also get 7GB of free Sky Drive.

Final Thoughts

A piece of beauty no one should miss. If you want something fresh in terms of built quality, OS, camera- just a different experience we HIGHLY like HIGHLY recommend you try this phone. This phone is just one brilliant smartphone made. HTC deserves good sales on such phones but lack of awareness is one reason they do not sell as much. It comes in Blue and Orange both in matte finish. Go get yourself one .

The HTC 8S comes for a price of Rs.15,320
