Apple iPad Mini Review

Steve Jobs made it clear during his run as Apple CEO that he will not even consider making a tablet whose size is less than 10 inches, he is gone and here it is the Apple iPad Mini. It is clear that Apple became desperate after seeing the 7-9 inch tab market set up by other companies. iPad mini is one of the most amazing 7.9-inch tablets. It runs on the usual iOS mobile operating system. Like the current generation of Apple products it has the Siri voice assistant. Read on to know more…..

It has tried to retain the same premium built that the generations of iPad has had but it seems to be compromised somewhere. iPad mini is also pretty heavy and weighs about 308g, that is a lot for a 7 inch tablet if you consider it as a primary device to be used. iPad mini also does not work with any GSM network across the globe. The tablet is surely slim and feels great in your hands with the cold metal feel. You also get a cool cover with iPad mini to protect and use it in different positions comfortably. It comes in white and black colours. If you wish to see less of fingerprints collected on the body and display the white one is better otherwise we all know which one looks better.

Apple iPad Mini Display
For the first time including iPhone and iPad a device is not going to have the Apple Retina Display on board which is kind of a disappointment. Apple consumers love their product for the beautiful display that is the clearest and the most well detailed display on devices without a doubt. iPad mini has a 768×1024 pixels 7.9 inch LED backlit IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display, phew that was a big one. Though it is not a retina display it is simply stunning and looks really beautiful. Colours are really accurate and true but the detailing seems to be a little off which is a result of the low 162 ppi pixel density.

Let’s face it we don’t really care much about how the camera on the tablets is because we mostly have a smartphone or atleast a digital camera to go with. But the tablet cameras need not be anything wow but atleast should be able to hold ground and take decent photographs to which the iPad mini does a great work. It has a 5 MP primary camera which captures really nice images that are clear enough, actually way more amazing than just “clear enough” to share on social media. Front facing camera though is a more serious forte as you are prone to make video calls more than anything else. The 1.2MP front facing camera is a wide angle camera and streams 720p HD video even on the call if you have appropriate bandwidth. Lens has been tweaked to illuminate the background automatically and hence better quality of video calls.

iOS is one of the top mobile operating system. It is known for its simplicity and the design. Currently the iPad mini comes with iOS 6 which will now be upgradable to iOS 7. The beauty of Apple products is that even if your product becomes older you still continue to get all the software updates which is totally cool. iOS is not as open as Android in terms of development and that is one reason for its long term durability and performance. Siri is also integrated and can do a lot more than it could with iOS 5.

Performance and Memory

It is safe to call it a lag free tablet, iPad mini runs like its going through a free fall, no problems at all. iPad mini runs on the 1GHz Dual Core A5 Apple processor which manages your tasks really well with the 512MB of RAM on board. You get options of 16GB/32GB/64GB with no expandable memory for your tablet with obvious increase in cost. It misses NFC but does have Bluetooth which can only pair with third party hardware.

Final Thoughts

iPad mini is a thing of beauty for its built and its performance. The display is still one of the best on a tablet till date and if it was a retina display it would have been the greatest. The pricing is also kind of okay for its features and gives you all the goodness of iPad 3 in a smaller size. Video playback is a total bliss and so is reading on this 7.9 inch display.
